Documentary is the work I care most about. Each film starts with a place and the people holding it together, usually somewhere in Leeds that might otherwise go undocumented. I spend time there before filming and build the cut around what people actually say, rather than a script written in advance.
I usually work alone, directing, shooting, recording sound, editing and grading. A small setup helps the room stay natural and gives me one clear line from the first conversation to the final cut. I use the same approach for multi-camera live sessions, DJ sets, gigs and events.
It started while I was studying at the University of Leeds, making films for a creative agency and running recordings for the music society. That is where documentary and live music first came together for me.
